Perseverance 2022

Visited the Purple Katz Quilt Shop in Rimbey and found fabric for next winter's quilt.  Based on the feature fabric Tula Pink/Whitecaps......a smooth sea never made a skilled sailor.  Will make it queen size with Lady of the Lake pattern for bedroom.

72  twelve inch squares assembled in an 8 x 8 pattern
resulting in a 96 x 96 inch quilt.
Pattern for queen size suggested 8 x 9 pattern
for a 96 x 108 inch quilt.
I prefer a slightly smaller size so adjustment made.

Tried 3 different layouts.

Black and white of the chosen layout to check values.

This is the layout I chose.......pinwheel placement.

This quilt block was named after a poem by Sir Walter Scott, published in 1810. The pioneer men and women loved the tales of Sir Walter Scott, and the women honored him by naming a patchwork block after the poem. The earliest quilted Lady of the Lake block appeared in 1820. This is one of the few quilt blocks that has never been known by another name!

The Lady of the Lake is a narrative poem by Sir Walter Scott, first published in 1810.  Set in the Trossachs region of Scotland (Loch Katrine), it is composed of six cantos, each of which concerns the action of a single day.  The poem has three main plots: the contest among three men, Roderick Dhu, James Fitz-James, and Malcom Graeme, to win the love of Ellen Douglas; the feud and reconciliation of King James V of Scotland and James Douglas; and a war between the lowland Scots (led by James V) and the highland clans (led by Roderick Dhu of Clan Alpine).

Here is an excerpt from the Fourth Canto-
The rose is fairest when 't is budding new,
        And hope is brightest when it dawns from fears;
The rose is sweetest washed with morning dew
And love is loveliest when embalmed in tears.
O wilding rose, whom fancy thus endears,
I bid your blossoms in my bonnet wave,
Emblem of hope and love through future years!'
Thus spoke young Norman, heir of Armandave,
What time the sun arose on Vennachar's broad wave.

Struggled with choosing type of thread and finally decided on this variegated Omni.  But it didn't work out as the thread would fray, become thin and break.  Then tried the Glide variegated thread called Affinity.  A bit more success but it ended up breaking as well.  Third try the charm.........Glide solid color thread (Colour Electric Blue) and was successful.

Wave pattern completed by flipping quilt on frame halfway
and flipping pattern boards to maintain wave format.
